GOP candidate for governor urges Cuomo to ax MTA management team

ALBANY — Former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra, who is seeking the GOP nomination to run for governor, called on Gov. Cuomo to fire the entire MTA management team.

“Cuomo is the conductor and he is running the train system into the ground,” Giambra said Friday.

He called on the governor to replace his appointees to the MTA board “to take charge of a transit system that is out of control, quite possibly corrupt, and costing taxpayers billions of dollars.”

He likened it to New Jersey-elect Gov. Phil Murphy's call this week to replace many of former Gov. Chris Christie's people at New Jersey Transit.

Giambra called the New York transit system “a disgrace,” citing waste, inefficiency and what he called a pay-to-play culture that drives up costs and makes “commuting a hellish experience.”

Cuomo spokesman Richard Azzopardi referred questions to the MTA, which shot back at Giambra.

“He must have been asleep during the last six months but (MTA Chairman) Joe Lhota — who restored the transit system in the wake of Hurricane Sandy — has assembled a team of world-class talent…all of whom have proven track records of getting results for riders.”

A Democratic source also hit Giambra, saying that “going after Joe Lhota is not how you endear yourself to (state Conservative Party Chairman) Mike Long.”

Lhota, a Republican, ran for mayor with Long's backing in 2013.

Long has said Giambra, a former Democrat who has given money to Gov. Cuomo and Hillary Clinton and helped raise funds for Mayor de Blasio, has no shot at his party's nomination.
