Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer gave President Trump’s 12-day trip to Asia an abysmal assessment, saying he has “never been so ashamed” of an overseas presidential trip.
“We attack our friends and the people who have given us the most trouble, China and Russia, we mollycoddle — that is so bad for the future of this country.”
Schumer called the tour a “colossal flop” and blasted the President for having a “love for dictators”
Trump’s whirlwind swing through the region brought him to five countries and lasted nearly two weeks. He played gold in Japan, met face-to-face with Russian president Vladimir Putin, tweeted insults about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and was wined and dine by world leaders during his travels.
Trump will fly back to Washington late Tuesday.
Trump promised a "major statement" upon his return.
“Every American should be embarrassed,” Schumer continued. “Adding insult to injury, he seems to have a love for dictators.”
Trump refused to admonish Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte during his trip to the country over human rights abuses.
The President instead patted himself on the back for his budding relationship with Duterte before wrongly claiming that his predecessor was denied entry to the Philippines.
“And as you know, we were having a lot of problems with the Philippines. The relationship with the past administration was horrible, to use a nice word,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.
“I would say ‘horrible’ is putting it mildly. You know what happened. Many of you were there, and you never got to land. The plane came close but it didn’t land.”
Trump appeared to be referencing a 2016 meeting with Duterte that President Barack Obama canceled after Duterte called him a “son of a b---h.”
The pair were meant to meet in Laos, not in the Philippines.
Duterte attacked another world leader on Tuesday after Canada’s Justin Trudeau raised questions about his war on drugs and human rights violations.
“I only answer to the Filipino. I will not answer to any other bull---t, especially foreigners. Lay off,” Duterte said.
