The wife of the suspect for the Istanbul nightclub rampage claims she never knew her husband was an ISIS sympathizer — let alone a fighter ready to strike.
“I learned about the attack from the TV,” the wife told the Hurriyet Daily News.
“I didn’t know that my husband was an ISIL militant, let alone a sympathizer.”
The at-large gunman has still not been identified, and the Istanbul-based newspaper did not name him or the wife.
The mystery remained even as more footage of the madman emerged. Turkish police released a selfie video of the shooter silently walking around Istanbul’s Taksim Square by himself. It is unclear if the killer filmed the footage before or after the attack.
The Hurriyet Daily News reported that the suspect, his wife and their two children traveled in November 2016 from Kyrgyzstan to Ankara, the Turkish capital, before settling in Konya. The family paid up front for three months rent, and the gunman told a real estate agent he came to Konya for work.
He then traveled to Istanbul Dec. 29 — just three days before he ambushed a New Year’s celebration at Reina, one of the city’s high-end nightclubs.
An anti-terror expert, Abdullah Agar, told the Hurriyet Daily News that the attacker was “absolutely a killer and he probably shot at humans before...he probably fired bullets in real clash zones.”
The shooting, which came only an hour into the new year, left 39 people dead — most of them foreign nationals. ISIS claimed responsibility for the carnage and called the killer a “heroic soldier of the caliphate.”

ISIS claimed a series of terror attacks that struck Istanbul in 2016, including a June bombing of the airport that killed 45 people.
Turkish police have detained at least 14 people in connection with the shooting, but not released details about any of them. The Hurriyet Daily News said some were the killer’s family members.
